ATTENTION EVERYONE! We are no longer using the word “gentrification” to describe what happens when the developers move in and ruin our favorite funky places. That would sounds too nice to properly describe the exploitation of the creative classes.
The word now is “generification”. This describes the process of taking a place created by visionaries and turning it into strip malls, chain stores, bland buildings and the same old, same old, so that every place looks like every other place and no place has any soul.
Alternatively “homogenization” which is the process of turning every unique community into a bland copy of every other community through the introduction of corporate mega-brands which overtake locally owned and creative businesses. via Facebook
